An example of one of these worthwhile enterprises is Building Blocks in Cape Town. 

Jenny single handedly takes in tiny babies (mostly black), some of whom have HIV, whose parents are either dead, or living on the streets and unable to care for them or afford the very high cost of retro-viral drugs.  

The charity covers a very large area and from time to time Jenny receives a call from
the Police station telling her that they have received an abandoned baby and asking for her help.  She provides a place of safety as an emergency mother for babies up to 12 months old.  As HIV babies go through a lot of nappies due to the internal infections, she desperately needs
